Our work at HMP Dovegate

Stoke and Newcastle Samaritans supports Dovegate prison which is situated in Marchington Staffordshire. Dovegate is a privately run prison which holds over 1000 male prisoners over the age of 21 all serving a range of sentences including trial, remand, awaiting sentence and convicted men serving over 4 years to life.

We train and support specially selected prisoners to become Listeners to other inmates who may be experiencing feelings of despair and distress and may also be having suicidal thoughts, so hopefully reducing the number of self inflicted deaths, reducing self harm and helping those who are in distress.

Listeners act in the same way as Samaritans regarding confidentiality, whereby any contacts they have as a Listener is kept strictly confidential between the Listener, the contact and Samaritans. This would also include after the listener or prisoner has left the prison and even after the death of a contact.

Members of the prison team go into Dovegate prison every three weeks , or more often if required, when Listeners will debrief to us about their contacts and also any issues they may have about how the scheme is working.
