Volunteering at Portsmouth's Branch

Next information evening: Tuesday 5 December 2017 starting at 7pm

These informal evenings outline what we do and why, and give you plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Meet Samaritans volunteers and find out why we find it so rewarding. We show you a video and explain what the time expectation is, but just so you know, we ask for one duty per week (3 or 4 hours) plus a night duty a month. We provide full training spread over about 8 weeks which is actually a lot of fun practising in a safe environment, before you talk to any callers.

People call us for all sorts of reasons - many just to let off steam because they're so stressed, but we listen to people at all levels of distress and despair. Never underestimate the power of really listening. When someone feels listened to, they start to clear their mind and make their own decisions without any need for advice.

In addition to listening volunteers we are also looking for support volunteers to help keep the Branch open by supporting other functions. We are currently looking for support volunteers with an interest in any of the following:

Health and safety

Fire Safety

Publicity

Maintenance of the Website

Fundraising

Gardening

House maintenance

Project management - property conversion

Supermarket Collections
