"I joined Samaritans as a volunteer so I could support people struggling to cope."
Are you able to listen to people tell their stories without judgement? Can you offer a calm and caring voice to those in need?
Samaritans volunteers are everyday people who devote some of their time to helping those in crisis. What makes a Samaritan special is their discretion, reliability, open-mindedness and willingness to really listen to others.
We are looking for listening volunteers who can offer a few hours each week. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life (you must be at least 18 years of age), no formal qualifications or previous experience is required.
Medway Samaritans provides full training as well as a range of resources and services to support new volunteers. We are not counsellors, as we do not give advice. We try to empathise with how a person feels by giving our total attention and focus.
Listening isn't right for everyone, but there are other ways you can help and get involved! We are always in need of support volunteers who play a vital role in keeping Medway Samaritans running. Support volunteers help in administration, IT, fundraising, publicity and building maintenance.
Why not come along to an informal awareness evening to find out more about volunteering, what we do, and other ways you can help?
Next sessions for 2017:
- Wednesday 22nd February at 7.30pm
- Thursday 13th April at 7.30pm
- Tuesday 20th June at 7.30pm
If you would like to volunteer at Medway Samaritans you can email us.
Alternatively, complete this volunteer interest form. It doesn’t commit you to anything. It simply tells your local branch that you’d like to find out more. You'll get an invite to an information evening, where you can talk to Samaritans volunteers, and ask as many questions as you like.
