Who we are:

Liverpool Samaritans Listening Service is delivered entirely by our volunteers who are all ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

We have over 130 dedicated volunteers as well as a paid Development Manager and Administrator supporting the work of the branch.

What we do:

Typically, each year our approx. 130 volunteers:

  • donate over 20,000 hours to running the Helpline – equivalent to 11 full time staff – which ensures Samaritans remain open to callers 24 hours a day, every day of the year;
  • respond to 40,000 calls for help via phone and email,
  • help over 250 of Liverpool’s most vulnerable people including those who are homeless, those bereaved by suicide, and prisoners;
  • raise awareness with the wider community through our work with other charities, corporates and other organisations reaching over 750 people.

Our Partnerships:

It’s now acknowledged that to help reduce suicide, we must reach out to people earlier and those people may not be aware of, or accessing our service.

To address this Liverpool Samaritans has worked hard to develop and extend our outreach services to reach anyone struggling to cope and to promote the importance of looking after our mental health and wellbeing.

Liverpool Samaritans works in partnership with Merseyrail, Network Rail, Aintree Hospital Emergency Department - where we have an Outreach - Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services, HMP Liverpool, Citizens Advice, local schools and local employers, such Liverpool City Council where we have developed an Online Referral Scheme for staff to refer vulnerable customers.

We are really excited to announce our new partnership with the Showmen's Mental Health Awareness Charity.

Locally we've provided our ‘Learn To Listen Like A Samaritan’ training to staff in Liverpool City Council, Citizens Advice, Trussell Trust, Merseyside Police and NHS Departments.
