Outreach is a vital and important part of our role. It is the way the public can identify us as part of the Island community and not just a national charity. It allows us to reach out and be a visible presence and support local events.
Our focus is wide in Outreach but we try and work with our identified at risk groups.
Some of our outreach activities are given below.
We try and attend community events on the Island and for example had a stall at the “Party in the Park” at Wootton for the “Talk to me” campaign.
We attend their volunteer fairs to enhance our community profile locally and recruit volunteers for listening and the shop. The last events were at Ventnor Botanical Gardens and Northwood House which were both great events.
School Outreach - We work to the Samaritans DEAL program which encourages children to think about emotional health and wellbeing. It’s not about selling our service it’s about how to reduce self harm and suicide in school age young adults who maybe struggling and peer support.
The homeless bus - We are working with this excellent community initiative but still in the early stages. This is an exciting project that we hope will be a partnership offering emotional support and outreach to the bus service users.
Mental Health on the Island - We work with Seven Acres our one and only mental health unit which incorporates a locked intensive care unit, acute ward and elderly persons unit in addition dementia ward and community teams. We have attended the mental health fairs two years running and have attended medicine for members events. The fairs are great events and again give us that valuable interface to our vulnerable in society.
