There are many way you can be involved with Havering Samaritans.
The obvious way is to become a ‘listener’ and answer the phones or meet visitors face-to-face. There are also Support Roles if you have a particular skill to offer. But there is another way you can ensure our work continues without setting foot inside the door. Havering Samaritans is an independent charity and would not exist without the generosity of donations from the public.
Nadine (photo) has a lifestyle that doesn't allow her the time needed to be a listening volunteer. No problem! Instead she and two friends took part in a 10km run in Victoria Park and donated the money raised directly to Havering Samaritans. That's a good example of how people can keep the Samaritans running (excuse the pun) without being a Samaritan.
Other examples include Chris who “walked the tube” visiting every underground station and Paul who did the London to Brighton cycle ride.
If fitness isn’t your thing then what about donating the proceeds of a boot sale, or hosting a coffee morning, or inviting a speaker to a meeting; if you wish to nominate us as your chosen charity please give us a call.
The Havering branch receives about 13,000 phone calls per year and almost 240 face-to-face visits for confidential emotional support. These numbers are increasing year on year. You can be assured your donation is put to good practical use at a local level.
