Guildford Samaritans has been serving the communities of Guildford, Waverley and Woking since July 1963. In June 2013 our work was recognised by our receiving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. We are based at 69 Woodbridge Road where we are fortunate to have a spacious Centre that enables us to provide not only a telephone listening service for our callers, but comfortable facilities for people who want to drop in between the hours of 9.30 am to 9.30 pm. We also offer e-mail and text support for those who find it easier to communicate in this way and we support the Listener schemes at our two local prisons HMP Coldingley and HMP Send.
Though the time, energy and commitment of our volunteers we provide a service for our callers that is second to none. We are there for anyone who needs us and by simply giving people space and time and listening to and accepting them we are offering something that perhaps no one else has ever done. The power of this should never be underestimated and it makes volunteering as a Samaritan very special.
Over the years demands have changed and whilst still providing the service at Woodbridge Road we are also developing projects outside of the branch. We are currently working with schools and colleges, the University of Surrey and other support groups and we have an active team of speakers who are kept busy visiting local groups and organisations to explain our activities and to raise awareness of the variety of services we offer.
We currently have 148 listening volunteers but for those who want to be involved in some other way, we also have support volunteers who form a vital part of our branch providing help and expertise in IT, administration, publicity, etc. We are completely self-funded and depend on income raised by donations, legacies and fundraising by volunteers in the branch.
We are always looking for new volunteers for both listening and support roles, so whatever skills you have to offer, please do get in touch and come along to one of our Information Sessions where you will receive a very warm welcome and will learn more about the work we do.
