  • Book Fairs at Walsingham Road

    Join us for a coffee or tea, a nibble on a biscuit and a browse through our books. Samaritans Book Fairs have become ‘must attend’ events for book lovers. Since 2012 over £24,000 has been raised in aid of Colchester Samaritans and over 6,000 people have passed through the doors.

  • Golf Day 2017

    84 golfers enjoyed an excellent, if slightly windy, days golf at Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club on Thursday 5th October. A fantastic profit of £3,206 was made for the branch on the day.

  • Schoolboy Jack visits Samaritans after raising funds

    Fourteen year old Colchester boy Jack, visited the Samaritans headquarters in Walsingham Road to present a cheque for £283, which he raised all on his own, following his participation in the 2017 Samaritans National Walk.
  • Sams at Colchester U's Open Day

    Volunteers from Samaritans will be taking part in this year’s Colchester United FC's annual Open Day on Sunday 17th July. The free event runs from 11am to 4pm and there promises to be plenty going on throughout the afternoon, including the return of Samaritans’ very own “Splat the Rat”.

  • 'Sesh for Luke' Charity Event

    ‘Sesh for Luke’ is an up-coming charity event on 29th July in memory of local Colchester man Luke Evans, who tragically died earlier this year. The event, to be held at Colchester Arts Centre, is in aid of the charities – PAPYRUS and SAMARITANS'.
  • Sams 'We Listen' trailer comes to town

    Samaritans is hosting a wellbeing event in Colchester town centre on Saturday 22 July with other local organisations, offering tips on how to look after your mental health. The aim is also to raise awareness of the support available for people who aren’t coping and may need some extra help.

    Support Volunteers Lesley Galpin and Phil Brown, along with many local dignitaries, helped to raise an astonishing £11,000 for Colchester Samaritans and Beacon House by taking part in the Rotary Club of Colchester Forum's charity fundraiser on 6th May 2017.

    Many thanks to the Colchester Sea Cadets, part of the UK's oldest nautical youth charity, who have just put up Samaritans banners onto the sides of their Lightship, moored at King Edwards Quay at the Hythe, on the east side of Colchester.

    Support Volunteers, Lesley Galpin and Phil Brown will be representing Colchester Samaritans in the Rotary Club of Colchester Forum's charity fundraiser on 6th May 2017. They will be spending a night sleeping out in Castle Park along with the likes of Colchester's MP Will Quince and our Mayor, Cllr. Julie Young, with support from Colchester’s High Steward Sir Bob Russell.

    Colchester Samaritans celebrated a new chapter in its 53 year history with the launch of its recently purchased van, designed to further its work in the local community. On Wednesday 18th January 2017 Colchester Mayor Julie Young and Samaritans CEO Ruth Sutherland were on hand to mark the official launch of the new vehicle.

  • Local Magician at Christmas Fundraiser

    Colchester Samaritans were entertained by local magician Michael J Fitch at a fundraising Christmas Party held in Walsingham Road Community Hall on 10th December. The party, with a three course gourmet meal, was organised to raise funds and to thank all volunteers for their hard work throughout the year.
  • Golfers raise £3,056 in sunny Clacton

    Colchester Samaritans held its annual fund-raising Golf Day at Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club on Thursday 15th September 2016. The event saw 80 players finishing 18 holes in spectacular sunny weather, but with a welcome sea breeze. A stunning £3,056 was raised in support of Colchester Samaritans.

  • Sainsbury's Local Charity of the Year

    Following online and in-store voting by members of the public, Samaritans was the winning charity by a narrow margin. The first day of fundraising and awareness was on Saturday 6th August 2016, with many volunteers and supporters present at the store.

    Colchester Samaritans volunteers were present at this year's CUFC Open Day at Weston Homes Community Stadium on Sunday 17th July, where an estimated 2,500 people came to meet Colchester United players and coaching staff and take part in a series of fun activities.
  • Colchester descends on Cornwall for National Walk 2016

    A team of 26 volunteers, supporters and friends from Colchester Samaritans took part in the annual Samaritans National Walk on Saturday 11th June to raise much needed funds. This was the biggest group from any of the 201 Samaritans’ UK and Ireland branches.
  • Quiz Night raises £580 for Sams

    A successful Spring Quiz Night in aid of Colchester Samaritans, held on Friday 22 April at the Walsingham Road Community Hall, raised a huge £580, which will help with the running costs of the branch and go towards the purchase of a Samaritans van for outreach work in the community.

    Over 600 people were at Hedingham Castle on Sunday 17 April for a ‘Clash of Knights’ triathlon in aid of Colchester Samaritans. Historia Normannis, a 12th century re-enactment society, held the medieval challenge at Hedingham, with teams of knights in full maille taking part.
  • Funds needed for outreach van

    Colchester Samaritans is looking for funding to help buy a dedicated van to further their work in the local community. Around £25,000 in total is needed to enable volunteers to take their message around Colchester and to towns and villages in North East Essex and the Suffolk borders.

    Listen to BBC Radio 4's Ramblings programme to hear Clare Balding OBE, renowned TV and radio broadcaster, talking to members of Colchester Samaritans’ Walking Group. Ms Balding met with the group on 30th December 2015 to record an edition of her popular Radio 4 series, chatting with walkers about their lives, volunteering with Samaritans and other interests as they rambled from Bures to Assington on the Essex/Suffolk border.
  • Clash of Knights Triathlon

    Head down to Hedingham Castle on Sunday 17 April 2016 for a ‘Clash of Knights’ triathlon in aid of Samaritans. Historia Normannis, a 12th century re-enactment society, will be holding a triathlon challenge at Hedingham Castle between 10am and 5pm, with teams of six knights taking part.
  • Outgoing Director thanked by branch

    Virginia Druitt, who has stepped down as Director of Colchester Samaritans at the end of her three year tenure, was thanked for her services to the branch at a recent meeting of fellow volunteers. She was presented with a portrait of her labrador dog, Mandy - a gift which came as a total surprise.

  • Bridge Drive raises £650

    A very successful Bridge Drive was held in aid of Colchester Samaritans at Nayland Village Hall on 1st December, raising £650 for branch funds. A big thank you to Val 829 for preparing and to David 1026 for serving the delcious tea, and to everyone else who helped to make this an enjoyable afternoon.
  • Christmas Book Fair Bonanza!

    2015's Christmas Book Fair raised a record £795 for Colchester Samaritans with record attendance. "Thank you and very well done to everyone for contributing to the success of the book fairs throughout 2015, and particularly the Christmas one." said fair organiser Pam.
  • Annual Quiz Night raises £921

    Our ever-popular annual quiz night fundraiser on 13th November raised a superb total of £921.75. The forever loyal Sams Catering Team provided a light supper, and the raffle raised £233.25. Thanks to everyone who attended and to our host and question-master David for his sterling work. Another great evening!
  • "Muddy Water" provides funds for Samaritans

    Local writer Neil Watson’s debut novel "Muddy Water" had its official launch on 1st November 2015 at the Royal British Legion Hall in Wivenhoe. The book features a number of local larger-than-life characters who paid to see their names in print. This crowd-funding also enabled the author to donate monies to a number of charities, including Colchester branch of Samaritans.

    A new director has taken over the reins at Colchester Samaritans. Retired teacher Carol Almond has been chosen by her fellow Samaritans to take up the unpaid three-year post as director of the Colchester, Tendring and Suffolk Borders branch.

    A phenomenally successful and enjoyably raucous evening in the company of tenor Jonas Kaufmann, soprano Danielle De Niese, pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, the BBC Singers & Symphony Orchestra and the good burghers of Dedham raised £1,239 for Colchester Samaritans.

    North East Essex schools and colleges are reporting very good AS and A level results. But there will certainly be disappointed students who have not achieved the grades they had hoped for. Their disappointment will be further intensified if the majority of their classmates are celebrating their own good news.
  • Commuters give generously at local rail stations

    Commuters and travelers dug deep into their pockets on Friday 12th June and filled buckets with spare change at Colchester, Manningtree, Marks Tey and Kelvedon stations, raising £667 in total. The weather was kind to all our collectors, who were on call from 6:30am for several hours, covering the rush hour.

    Following the successes of previous years, Colchester Samaritans held its annual fund-raising golf day at Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club on Thursday 11th June 2015. The sell-out event saw players finishing 18 holes in spectacular but breezy weather and raising a record £3,246 in support of Colchester Samaritans.
  • Walkers descend on Bronte Country

    15 Colchester Samaritans volunteers, partners and friends – the largest contingent from any branch in the UK – descended on Haworth, West Yorkshire for the weekend of 6th June 2015 and took part in the annual NATIONAL SAMARITANS WALK organised by Bradford Samaritans.
  • Volunteers honoured for 24 years service

    Long-serving Samaritans volunteers have been recognised for their service to Colchester Samaritans at a presentation of certificates in memory of Claire Squires. Claire collapsed and died running the 2012 London Marathon, having chosen to fundraise for Samaritans because of her mum Cilla’s commitment to the charity.

  • New venue for face-to-face service in Clacton-on-Sea

    Colchester Samaritans has a new venue for its face-to-face service in Clacton, starting on Thursday 14th May. The location is the Coastal Community Centre on Pathfields Road in Clacton, and two Samaritans volunteers will be present in the Centre’s communal area and café from 10pm to 1pm every Thursday.

    More than 2,000 runners braved the wind and rain to compete in Colchester's half marathon on 29th March 2015, racing through the town and surrounding countryside. One of these runners was Jenny Richardson, a volunteer at Colchester Samaritans, who has already raised £1,200 for the Colchester branch.
  • Rugby Star supports Colchester Samaritans

    Irish international rugby full back Geordan Murphy was guest speaker at a Sporting Dinner at Colchester Rugby Club, jointly organised by The Rotary Club of Colchester and Colchester Samaritans on Wednesday 12th November 2014. Murphy is one of Ireland’s most capped players and was a leading force in many Premiership triumphs of his club, Leicester Tigers.
  • Quiz Night at Colchester Samaritans

    The hugely popular annual Samaritans Quiz Night took place last October with our support volunteer host and Quiz Master - David. The quiz celebrated our 50th Anniversary and was held at Walsingham Road Community Hall, raising just under £700 for branch funds.
