Welcome to Durham Samaritans

Durham homepage twitter size.png

Our branch is situated in Durham City and we are a short walk from Durham railway station and Durham bus station.

We are not currently open for face to face visits, but our volunteers continue to use the branch to provide telephone and email support.

We have been providing support to telephone callers and visitors for over 50 years and also offer email support for those who find it easier to communicate this way. Our service is needed as much today as it was back in 1971 and every year, we take around 25,000 calls from people going through difficult times.

We work closely with Durham University, providing training and support to Nightline, a student-run listening service for students. Our volunteers provide training to prison listeners in Durham and Low Newton prisons. We regularly liaise with staff at LNER's Durham Railway station to promote our service to passengers and staff, and also give outreach talks to local schools, colleges and community groups.

We can also be found at important annual events such as the Durham Miners’ Gala, Durham Pride, Newcastle's Crisis at Christmas and the Great North Run. Our volunteers and supporters are also involved in regular fundraising events - from bake sales to fashion shows to golf days. This year we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary with various activities and events including our 50 for 50 Challenge in May. Our twitter account - @DurhamSams - provides regular updates on all of our activities, so please follow us to find out more!

We are always looking for new volunteers for both listening and support roles, so whatever skills you have to offer, please do get in touch. We run Information Sessions and Selection events where you will receive a very warm welcome and the opportunity to learn more about the work we do.
