Sector Star Awards 2016
The Sector Star Awards are an annual event celebrating the contribution that the voluntary sector makes to the City. This year Brighton, Hove & District Samaritans won the category; ‘Outstanding Volunteering Contribution: Adults’. The judging panel gave the award for ‘the outstanding work that the organisation does each year through the dedication of a huge number of volunteers, who contribute many hours to the local community and who often go unsung’. Winning this award is a great acknowledgement of what Samaritans achieves both locally and nationally. Thanks to the effort our volunteers put in we are able to be available to callers at times that others can’t. Getting this recognition also puts the Branch on the map locally and reminds other organisations and potential callers that we exist. Thank you so much!
Christmas Gift Wrapping
Over the Christmas period you might have spotted our volunteers at the Brighton branch of Waterstones, helping out with some Christmas gift wrapping. If you did and popped a donation in our pot then we'd like to say an enormous thank you to each and every one of you - thanks to your kind donations we raised a whopping £1,600! This will go a long way towards helping to keep the branch open and of course, top up on biscuits.
Facing the Future
Facing the Future is a facilitated peer support group jointly run by Cruse and Samaritans for people bereaved by suicide. It is still in its pilot stage, funded by the NHS until July 2017. In Brighton we have recently finished running our first series of 6 sessions. Group members appear to have benefitted from talking about their bereavement with others in a similar position in the safe space we provide for them. This process is just one step in their making sense of what has happened. We hope that they will be able to build on it. If you've been bereaved by suicide or what like to find out more, you can at www.facingthefuturegroups.org
