Samaritans National Walk 2018

Samaritans National Walk 2018 – a walk through nature, a walk through history

Join us for one of the most beautiful and historic walks in the epitome of rolling English countryside - the hills and valleys, rivers and canals to the south of the World Heritage City of Bath.

Where: Starting at Bath University, just outside the City of Bath

When: Saturday 9 June 2018

Serious Walkers - Budding Ramblers - Energetic Supporters - All Welcome!

We are offering a choice of two walks:

12.5 miles. Starting at Bath University, walking along the Bath Skyline Walk, then through the majestic River Avon Valley, by the stunning Dundas Aqueduct, along the peaceful Midford Brook, before climbing up the dramatic limestone escarpment and back to the University.

23 miles. Starting and finishing as above and taking in a extra loop south to historic Hinton Priory, returning via the recently re-opened mile long, atmospheric Combe Down Tunnel (formerly a Somerset & Dorset railway tunnel).

Both walks have options of a shortcut near the end that reduces their distances to 10 and 20.5 miles.

The start, finish and evening event will all be at Bath University, The Avenue, Claverton Down, BATH, BA2 7AY

Spaces on the two walks will be limited, so please register soon to avoid disappointment.

Further information

The walks will take place across the stunning hills and valleys, canals, rivers, woods, and by-ways of the rolling countryside to the East and South of Bath.

These routes are full of variety and interest: set in natural limestone landscapes in which nestle quiet villages.  Both walks  will include a section of the famous ‘Bath skyline’ walk, offering views of the World Heritage City, with its Roman hot spring baths, spectacular 16th century Abbey – the “Lantern of the West” – and its impressive Georgian/Palladian townscape.

And with elements of half-forgotten early industrial landscapes – think coal canals and abandoned stone quarries – plus traces of pre-historic, Roman and medieval land use, these walks will get your imagination working, as well as your body!

It’s all for an excellent reason, of course: so that our Samaritans volunteers can be here for people to talk to whenever they need us.

Make a Day of It!

Refreshments and water will be provided at the start, finish and all checkpoints, with bacon butties, rolls, fruit and cereals bars at selected stops.  Hot drinks and cakes will also be available at the end of your walk.

Starting from 7:00pm there will be Samaritans BIG BATH BASH at the University, with plenty of delicious local food (with vegetarian options), followed by musical entertainment and dancing, with live music.  The cost of all this is included in your walker registration fee.  There will also be a cash bar.

Family members or non-walkers  who may want to stroll in the streets of Bath during the day can join us in the evening by purchasing an ‘Evening Event Only’ ticket.

We’re a charity and it’s your kind donations that keep us open.  After covering our expenses for the day, your registration fee will help us provide support to the local community and   keep our helplines open round the clock, every day of the year.

Fees are:

£30 for main walks including evening event

£25 for main walks and evening event when entering as a group of 6 or more

£20 for walks only

£5 for evening event only for 12 years & under
