Welcome to Basildon & Thurrock Samaritans

Basildon & Thurrock Branch

We serve the communities of South Essex and towns including Grays, Wickford, Billericay, Stanford-le-Hope and Basildon. We were formed in 1967 when local businesspeople got together and decided there was a need for a Samaritans in Basildon. Our branch was formed in a small room at the back of the old doctors’ surgery in the Fremnells. Two years later in 1969 we moved 500 yards to a room in St. Andrews Church where we opened for a few hours more. It was not until 1971 that we moved to our present home, 16 Little Lullaway.

We currently have roughly 90 active listening volunteers who represent a diverse cross section of the community that we live in, as well as support volunteers who help keep our branch running. We are open over 80 hours a week taking visitors, calls and responding to online chat requests.

We work in partnership with Network Rail, Essex Partnership University Trust and Thurrock Council to support out local community.

Donations

We rely on support from the public to keep our branch going. If you’re interested in donating to our branch to help us support our community, you can do so in a number of ways:

  • Donate to our branch via Enthuse
  • Sign up to Easyfundraising and raise money for Basildon & Thurrock Samaritans whenever you shop online

Volunteering with us

Like every Samaritans branch, we are run entirely by volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering for us, please contact us via the link at the bottom of the page. We are always on the lookout for volunteers! Even if you’re unsure if being a listening volunteer is for you, we still welcome volunteers who have other skills to offer, such as experience with fundraising.

Covid-19 Update

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we are no longer accepting face-to-face visitors at our branch. This is a temporary measure and is being reviewed regularly. We apologise for the inconvenience this causes. If you’re in need of emotional support, remember you can still call us at 116 123 – our volunteers are responding to your calls and emails and we have remained open during the pandemic.
