Volunteering with Herefordshire Samaritans

Herefordshire Samaritans has around 100 volunteers aged from around 19 to 80, who join us with various backgrounds and experience. Most of our volunteers provide support over the phone, by email and text and face-to-face, but there are many other ways to help. We have opportunities in administration, fundraising, helping in the shop or through becoming a Friend of Herefordshire Samaritans.

There are no minimum qualifications required but to become a 'listening' volunteer with us you should be able to agree to around three hours per week and twelve overnight shifts in a year.

What to expect when applying to become a volunteer at Herefordshire Samaritans

Information sessions are your chance to learn more about what we do, ask questions and discover if volunteering with Samaritans is for you. The sessions are normally held every five weeks or so at our branch premises in Berrington Street and last around 2 hours.

If you decide to make an application you’ll be invited to a more in-depth event. Here you can ask any questions that came out of the information session and it will give us a chance to learn about you and which roles best match your interests and experience.

Once your application has been approved you’ll be given comprehensive training after which you’ll be able to see our current volunteers in action and, when you feel ready, answer your first call.

A mentor is assigned to new volunteers for approximately six months and ongoing support is always available.
