Volunteering Information

Volunteering at Hastings and Rother Samaritans

We are always looking for more volunteers at Hastings and Rother Samaritans, so if you’re interested in volunteering with us, you can find the details regarding what we look for in our volunteers, as well as our upcoming information events below.

We are hoping to recruit two types of volunteers: “Listening Volunteers” and “Support Volunteers”.

Listening Volunteers

Listening Volunteers are those that listen to our callers, through phone calls, face-to-face visits at the branch, and through e-mail and SMS replies as well. The Listening Volunteers volunteer one 4 hour shift a week, suiting the shift to the volunteer’s availability.

Prospective Listening Volunteers should be:

  • Interested in listening to people who are going through a tough time.
  • Open minded and non-judgmental.
  • Able to listen without telling people what to do next.
  • Good at working with other people.

If this sounds like a position that fits you then you will receive full training where you will learn to do something special by helping people at difficult times in their life, while being supported every step away from your fellow Listening Volunteers and the Support Team.

Support Volunteers

Our Support Volunteers are those that prefer to support the branch rather than listen through many important and valuable means. We welcome those who would like to share their skills in marketing, fundraising, I.T. Support, and administration.

If you are interested in joining our branch as a Support Volunteer, you will be a valuable part of our team, as the work of the Support Volunteers takes the pressure off of our Listening Volunteers and makes it easier for them to do their job, while also keeping the branch running and up to date. The importance of our Support Volunteers is paramount with our Listening Volunteers in helping us to reduce the number of people who choose to take their life through suicide.
