Volunteering in Coventry

Our current volunteering options

Listening volunteers

  • Listening volunteers offer support to our callers via phone, text, email or face-to-face listening.  We look for volunteers who are caring and compassionate and are willing to listen to anyone without prejudice, without judgement and without offering advice, so the caller can explore their feelings, including those that may lead to suicide.
  • Listening volunteers are taught how to question gently, tactfully – without intruding – and to encourage people to tell their own story in their own time.  They do not provide advice or counselling but give callers an opportunity to discuss their concerns safe in the knowledge that we will not judge them and that anything they say will remain confidential.
  • Typically each volunteer will do one shift per week (usually lasting three to four hours).  Because we offer a 24-hour service, these shifts will normally include a number which are early in the morning, late at night or throughout the night
  • No specific qualifications are needed as we offer extensive training and mentoring to equip volunteers to take on this role.
  • We pay expenses for travelling to and from the branch

Support volunteers

We do not employ any staff to help in the running of our branch. So, if you have a particular set of skills or you want to support us but aren’t sure if listening would be for you, then perhaps you could help out in one of the following areas:

  • Working in our charity shop
  • Finance
  • Maintenance
  • Publicity and events
  • Fundraising
  • Administration

We hold regular Information Meetings to help you find out more about volunteering with us.  Please click here for the dates.
