For well over ten years, volunteers from Belfast branch of Samaritans have presented a piece of drama that has proved thought provoking and challenging to audiences all over Northern Ireland.
Challenging Drama from Belfast Samaritans
Originally conceived for use in training of Samaritan volunteers, 'This Was Your Life' brings the story of the circumstances of one person's death by suicide to the audience. Although we are not professional actors, the presentation has nonetheless had a powerful impact on audiences over the years with its portrayal of the far reaching ripple effects of a single death by suicide, moving beyond the statistics in the media to the real lives and real feelings of those involved.
Focusing on the perspective of each of a number of key people in the person's life it explores their reactions to the event itself and the often powerful feelings that may result. Things are taken a a step further by inviting the audience to engage with the characters directly. Uniquely, the presentation also brings the perspective of the person who died to the fore, giving them a voice to explore what kind of feelings are typical of those who find themselves struggling to find a way to go on. The potentially vital role of a non-judgemental listening ear, offered without condition, is a key theme emerging from the story.
