Volunteers Needed!

volunteer listening
Thursday 4th January 2018
Is your New Year's resolution to do something new and challenging? How about volunteering with our branch?

In the coming months, we are recruiting and training new listening volunteers! So many people have it in them to be a Samaritans volunteer here in Bangor and North Down. To touch another person’s life when it really matters, by helping them directly, or by keeping our branches running, is a rare gift.

Interested in getting involved?

Before becoming a listening volunteer with Bangor & North Down Samaritans, we ask you to attend an Information event and a Selection event.

What are Information Events?

These informal evenings outline what we do and why, and give you plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Meet Samaritans volunteers and find out why we find it so rewarding. We show you a video and explain what the time expectation is, but just so you know, we ask for one duty per week (3 or 4 hours) including a night duty a month. We provide full training spread over about 10 weeks which is a lot of fun as you practise and learn in a safe environment, before you talk to any callers.

People call us for all sorts of reasons - many just to let off steam because they're so stressed, but we listen to people at all levels of distress and despair. Never underestimate the power of really listening. When someone feels listened to, they start to clear their mind and make their own decisions without any need for advice.

Dates for your diary:

  • Monday 29 January 2018 @ 19.00hrs, Information Event.
  • Monday 05 February 2018 @ 19.00hrs, Selection Event.
  • Saturday 10 February 2018 @ 10.00hrs, Information & Selection Event.

If you'd like to come along and find out more, please drop us a quick email (recruitingbangornisams@gmail.com) to let us know!

We look forward to hearing from you!
