Volunteering at Bangor & North Down branch

Could you be a Bangor & North Down volunteer?

Our service is entirely dependant on volunteers, and our listening volunteers are what Samaritans is all about. Our volunteers 'listen' through the phone, emails, letters, face-to-face or by text, providing emotional support to the many people who contact Samaritans each year.

We need more people to join our branch and train as listening volunteers!

"Becoming a Samaritans volunteer was probably one of the best things I've ever done. I've gained so much more confidence and have made so many new friends!"

Our volunteers are just ordinary folk like you, and come from a variety of backgrounds. We're very friendly and love the opportunity to welcome new members into the branch. One of the best things about Samaritans volunteering is that the training is extensive and we are all trained in the very best ways to provide non-judgemental emotional support.

Once you get stuck in, you will receive all the help you will need to get the most out of your training. After that you can depends on full support from your own personal mentor and your fellow colleagues - don't worry you are never left to deal with a difficult situation on your own.

There are so many rewarding qualities to volunteering! On top of our brilliant training and support, you will:

  • Feel the satisfaction of doing something valuable for your community and beyond
  • Adding to your skillset, and finding skills that you never knew you had!
  • Be part of friendly team of people that are motivated by the same goals as you

We hold regular Information Sessions in our branch in Bangor and our next Information/Selection session will be held early 2018. These session start at 10:00 and will last until around 14:00. Please email recruitingbangornisams@gmail.com to find out more information and book your place - we need to know how many biscuits to have ready for you!

Not sure if a listening role is right for you? Well there's other opportunities you can get involved with like:

  • Administration
  • Fundraising
  • Publicity
  • Centre Maintenance
  • Outreach

We'll be happy to have your skills on board!

Just a few more things...

You must be over 18 years old to volunteer with us and once you have completed the Selection Process, a Disclosure & Barring Service check must be completed. This is a legal requirement and must be done before you can actively support callers.

If you have any questions, or just want to find out more about our volunteering, please contact us on recruitingbangornisams@gmail.com and we will be happy to help!
