About The role/person
Samaritans are recruiting for a Media Adviser who will play a critical role in our award-winning work with the UK media (print, broadcast and online) and other communications professionals to ensure responsible reporting of suicide. The post holder will be part of our expert Media Advisory team, working to provide advice and support to key stakeholders (including media and local authorities) on the responsible portrayal of suicide in the media, and play a crucial role in delivery of a project to update and expand Samaritans’ Media Guidelines for Reporting Suicide.
Research shows that inappropriate reporting of suicide can lead to imitative behaviour. The key aim of Samaritans’ media advisory team is to support the media and communications’ industry in approaching the topic of suicide responsibly, to reduce the risk of media coverage influencing suicidal behaviour among vulnerable people.
The Media Adviser is crucial to this area of our influencing work. We’re looking for someone with excellent communication and negotiation skills, project management experience, a working knowledge of media and a supportive, proactive approach, to join our team. Reporting to our Executive Lead within our Media Advisory team, you will play a critical role in expanding this unique area of work.
At Samaritans, our vision is that fewer people die by suicide. We believe it is preventable and that by working together we can give people the support they need before they reach crisis point. We are one of the most trusted charities in the UK and ROI, and we answer a call for help every six seconds. We have around 175 staff and more than 20,000 volunteers based across 201 branches giving emotional support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We don’t just hear you, we listen.
Our Central Office is located in a converted mill in Ewell, Surrey which is just over 30-minutes by train from Waterloo and 15 minutes from Wimbledon.
