Cassie's Story
I've been diagnosed with bipolar disorder (manic
depression) for about 7 years now and find quite sparse support for
it. Friends and family, though they care, cannot really understand
it or support me to figure it out. Samaritans has been an
invaluable lifeline and support for me.
Sometimes I am low and confused by the lack of support and the
stigma and prejudice I face from people around me. Samaritans
listen unconditionally. They listen to what I am saying at that
moment. And because they listen without giving advice or forming
judgements, they can really help me to figure out ways forward.
It often feels like mental health is the last taboo to be
overcome. Physical disabilities or conditions have become more
accepted and understood. People can be more open about their
sexuality. Many stigmas have been broken down. Which is great, but
I can really feel the stigma surrounding mental health. There is a
lack of education, understanding and support, which is a shame
because it can affect anyone. But some people don't want to know
about it, in case they 'catch' it. So just when people need
support; they don't get it.
It is so helpful to be able to talk to Samaritans, because
that's the most helpful thing for me. And I'm sure it has helped me
not be reliant on strong medication. Samaritans are there to talk
things through, which is what is needed, rather than just taking a
pill. I do have a counsellor, which is fine for working through
issues but is only 50 minutes once a week. Samaritans service is so
valuable for being able to call at any time day or night.
They have really helped me get to the bottom of some issues, and
work through many difficult emotions. It is immensely comforting to
know that they are there and that there is someone to talk to if I
need it.
I have made enormous leaps and bounds with my bipolar, and
it is in large part to Samaritans for helping me through it, when I
had no one else to turn to. Everyone else found it too disturbing
and were battling with their own issues. Samaritans seem very well
trained. And I am immensely grateful to them for existing and doing
such good and valuable work.
