The Oxford Branch was established in 1963. Its volunteers have been trained to the same high standards as are all Samaritans. They come from all walks of life and are of all ages. All are people who give up twenty hours a month to be available to callers and to provide confidential, emotional support to people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. Samaritans have no message. They do not preach. They do not sell. They are there to offer a sympathetic, non-judgmental ear to people in need. Available 24 hours a day, they offer confidential support to callers who often have nowhere else to turn.

If you feel you would be able to listen, give callers your full attention and completely forget about yourself when doing so, you might like to consider becoming a Samaritan volunteer.

The Oxford Samaritans invite prospective volunteers to attend an open evening as an opportunity to learn about acquiring the listening skills Samaritans volunteers need. Application forms are distributed and details provided about the commitment we make to our volunteers and what we expect from them. These evenings are held at regular intervals and prospective volunteers who make application will, if accepted, attend a preparation course held several times a year. Ring 01865 722122 for your invitation.
