The money raised for Basingstoke Samaritans
has been hugely important to the branch at a time when volunteer
numbers have been dropping.
Part of the funds raised is to be used to
raise awareness and advertise for more volunteers, both listening
and non-listening.
A large part of the funds will be spent on
updating the branch.
This includes :-
- changing a bedroom in to a resting room to
allow people to have an area to rest when on a night duty.
- getting better chairs for the Operation
room.
- improving the acoustics to improve the
quality of sound between volunteer and caller.
- better lighting.
They are also about to purchase two new phones
for the Operation Room and may replace a second hand computer which
will enable them to get involved in delivering emotional support
via text messaging as well as allowing them to create a branch
database. With the text message emotional support service
proving so popular in the pilot phase it’s essential that as many
branches as possible have the equipment to be able to provide the
service.
With the funds raised in the next few months
the branch intends to further their Outreach Development within the
local Community. This will entail internal training, further
recruitment, and developing a plan to target certain areas such as
schools, workplaces and Primary Care Trusts for support in mental
health care.
