"Stoke
and Newcastle Samaritans first opened its doors in 1962, since then
Samaritan volunteers have been there to listen to people with problems.
"
Everyone goes through times of
emotional distress and despair. At these times it can help to talk things
through with someone who does not know you and so does not have any
preconceived ideas. People
who contact us come from all walks of life. They represent all ages
and lifestyles, from the unemployed to the captains of industry.
From the anonymous housewife to the more famous household name.
Depression and emotional stress affect us all and statistics show us
that there is every chance that someone in your place of work will
have, at some time, turned to us for help.
Volunteering for
Samaritans could change your life -
look what some of
our Volunteers say......
Why
volunteer?
"Being
a Samaritan has taught me so much. I have learned new skills and
grown in confidence. I have been given the opportunity to meet so
many different people and can honestly say it has changed my life -
for the better!" - Nigel
"There
is a sense of belonging to an extended family, belonging to a team."
- Jenni
"Being part of Samaritans has given me experiences that I wouldn't
have had otherwise and I've met people from a wide variety of backgrounds
who I'd never have come into contact with before - it's always interesting
and challenging." - Steve
24yrs
What
makes us continue to be volunteers?
"It's
the simplicity of what we offer - a listening ear to people in
emotional distress.
The satisfaction that I can play a small part in ensuring that when
someone needs to reach out to someone else, we are there."
- Peter
"The
greatest benefit to me is realising how fortunate I am and putting
events, including work, into a proper context. It's made me more
aware as a person and given me the ability to listen to and help
other people." - Dave
