Volunteering for Stockport Samaritans . . .
. . . can change someone’s life, your own!
Being a Samaritan isn’t just about helping others. Through the training and through our work we also learn more about ourselves and develop skills in listening without judgement and being with people. It is so easy to respond to someone’s distress by doing something, being with Sam’s teaches you to ‘just be there’- which is usually what people really need.
These skills aren’t only helpful in our work as Sams, they are important skills for our own working lives and relationships, developing our ‘emotional intelligence’. As well as developing skills being a Samaritan can also be a lot of fun! Whether it is talking together during a shift, social or fund-raising events Samaritan volunteers share a lot of laughter. We also share support- both during our work and at other times.
Most Sams start volunteering to change someone else’s life – and we do - but you’ll be most surprised at the change in yourself!
