The 2009 Annual General Meeting . . .
. . . from the Samaritans’ new strategy to a discussion on the treatment of older people by the medical profession.
The 2009 AGM was held on 10 June 2009 at the branch, and was a good opportunity for our Director to review the new Samaritans’ Strategy, which was launched at the York conference in September 2008. This redefines who we are and what we stand for as an organisation, and publicly reaffirms Samaritans’ commitment to the goal of reducing suicide.
The guest speaker was Professor Banerjee, who has specialised throughout his career in Older People’s Mental Health, and gave an interesting and insightful talk about the way that the medical profession treats older people. His attitude could be summed up in the career objective that he shared with the audience – to make people live well and die young as late as possible. The fact that many questions were asked and experiences shared reflected the fact that his talk rang bells for many of the attendees, from both a personal and a “Samaritans” perspective.
