. . . Morecambe Bay Walk
Volunteers and friends from the Stockport branch joined over 300 Samaritans for a sponsored walk across Morecambe Bay. The event, which was organised by the Lancaster branch, involved Samaritans from all across the Region as part of the movement’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The date (24/7) was specially chosen to reflect the Samaritan’s unique 24-hour, 7-days a week service providing emotional support whenever and wherever it is needed.
Walkers of all ages completed the eight-mile crossing, though some four-legged friends needed carrying through the deeper, fast-flowing channels and a tractor and trailer called “the Sandpiper” was available for those who tired. Fast flowing water and quicksand make the sands extremely treacherous and crossing with a recognised guide is essential. Cedric Robinson OBE led this walk from Arnside to Kent’s Bank. He is the Queen’s Guide to the Sands and has been leading the Cross Bay Walks since 1963.
