FAQs About us
What do I need to be a Samaritan?
There are no formal qualifications. You must be at least 18, be a good listener and be willing to learn.
What is my commitment?
Your commitment as a full volunteer is to undertake 4 duties a month one of which must be an overnight shift. You book your own duties and as there are plenty of shifts we are usually able to accommodate every different lifestyle. Our evening and night duties might particularly appeal to anyone who works shifts. You also agree to undertake a minimum of 5 hours on-going training a year.
Will I be on my own on duty?
No, there is always a minimum of 2 volunteers on duty and we maintain an additional support system for all volunteers for all duties.
Is training always given?
Yes, all volunteers receive extensive training before they are allowed contact with callers. Please see the details on Volunteer Training.
Are Samaritan volunteers paid?
No, all Samaritan volunteers give their time for free. Reasonable travelling expenses to and from the Branch can be reclaimed although some volunteers voluntarily choose to donate their expenses back under the gift aid scheme thereby enhancing their donation with a tax refund.
