- We have close links with the locally-based Suicide Awareness Project (SAP). This is a collaborative initiative which visits schools and
doctors' surgeries. Part of SAP's task is to publicise the help which is available to those at risk of self-harm.
Samaritans are a significant factor in that help, as they can be contacted at any time for immediate emotional support.
- We hold Open Days/Evenings at our Centre in North End, Portsmouth. These events provide lots of information,
and people have the opportunity to find out more by meeting and talking to a Samaritans volunteer.
- We have a special arrangement with the Accident & Emergency Department at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham for people
who self-harm or attempt suicide. After being discharged these patients can
need special support in the following few days or weeks. Health professionals at the hospital recognise
that Samaritans help can be invaluable at such times, and where appropriate will make an arrangement for us
to phone the patient on their return home. We will make this call and give unhurried support to the patient, and offer to keep in contact
afterwards while the need remains.
- We actively engage with HM Prison Kingston, Portsmouth. Because we recognise the special vulnerability of prisoners,
we regularly visit the prison and train selected prisoners in Samaritans support skills. These trained prisoners are known
as "Listeners" and will help and support their fellow prisoners in sometimes very difficult emotional circumstances.
