Managing Suicidal Contacts

Overview

Sometimes work can bring us into contact with people who indicate they have suicidal feelings. This can raise our anxiety levels and leave us fearful of how to respond effectively. This course will show you how to respond and acknowledge difficult feelings and circumstances without taking on responsibility for the person’s distress.

This course has been designed for staff of all levels who wish to enhance their listening and questioning skills through e-mail

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Provide emotional first aid to people who feel suicidal
  • Pick up on hidden messages
  • Listen for feelings as well as meaning and respond appropriately
  • Acknowledge suicidal feelings
  • Make sensitive and effective referrals
  • Use support effectively
