Listener Scheme is saving troubled prisoners’ lives

The Eastern Daily Press newspaper has published a special report about our Listener Scheme at Wayland Prison in Norfolk, which was set up by the King’s Lynn branch of Samaritans nine years ago.

The report investigates how selected prisoners are trained and supported by Samaritans to listen in complete confidence to their fellow prisoners, who may be experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.

Meanwhile, Emma Preston at the North West Evening Mail visited our Listener Scheme at Cumbria’s HMP Haverigg and interviewed Samaritan Carol Smith, as well as the prison team.

In the report, Carol, who co-ordinates the project, explains just why our Listener Scheme is so important.
