Volunteering Here at the Kingston-Upon-Thames branch we are a friendly, welcoming team: a mixed group with different backgrounds, coming from all walks in life and ranging from 18 years old to ages we’d rather not admit to! We are always in need of new volunteers and we offer two routes by which you can help us with our work – by being a Listening Volunteer or by being a Support Volunteer. Listening Volunteers are ordinary, everyday people, who are good at listening, who do not make judgments about our callers or try to tell them what to do and who want to provide emotional support to those callers. Support Volunteers believe in the work we do and want to give their time to help Samaritans in ways other than through direct support of our callers. We hold regular Information Sessions at the branch for potential new volunteers - dates and times are listed below - and we hold these in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. If you can spare some time on a regular basis and would like to find out more why not come along and see what it is all about? The Information Session lasts just under two hours and will give you a good understanding of what being a Samaritans volunteer involves. You will be shown a DVD that gives some background to the work of Samaritans and what we do. We will talk to you about the commitment required from a Listening Volunteer and the various ways it can be met and you will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions both in a group discussion and on a one-to-one basis. If being a Listening Volunteer does not seem like the right choice for you, then you might decide that you would prefer to become a Support Volunteer. Many opportunities for Support Volunteers exist within the branch, with roles in DIY, organising speaking or fundraising events, admin, PC and telephone technical support, helping with can shakes and leaflet mail drops, gardening, publicity and premises management (amongst others) needing able volunteers. More information about the process of becoming a Samaritan – either a Listening or Support Volunteer – will be provided at the Information Session. You are welcome to attend any Information Session – there is no need to confirm your attendance, you can just turn up at 12 St. Andrew’s Road, Surbiton - view mapINFORMATION SESSION DATES FOR 2010 Sunday 10 January - 11.00 am
