The Shop

Our shop is the only source of regular income we have for the branch and has therefore been invaluable since its opening in 1983. From what it earns, we are able to cover the considerable expenses involved in running an efficient Samaritans branch and provide the badly needed service we offer. Our various telecom's bills for phone and e-mail contact are substantial, as are the costs of maintaining the building in good order for both our callers and our volunteers. Lighting, heating, furnishing … and on down to stationery, postage, and even the essential cups of tea and biscuits.

Shop Volunteers

The shop is run by a small band of thankfully dedicated volunteers - though they invariably need reinforcements. Shop hours are 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday and volunteers do a 3½ hour shift - some more than one a week. Some are also 'listening' volunteers in the branch but most just do the shop.

It's ideal for non-working people, needs a certain amount of physical stamina, and is a very enjoyable way to meet a wide variety of customers. As a volunteer, you sell over the counter and also help with sorting and preparing goods for sale. We will always welcome more volunteers - just ring the shop number below.

Goods

Like most 'charity shops', we don't buy and mark-up for profit, we depend wholly on donated items for our stock. The better the condition of goods, the better our pricing and return can be - we can't sell stuff you wouldn't buy yourself. We can't sell electrical goods or large furniture items - anything else will always be very welcome (though we sometimes have more books than we can display).
