For a number of years, we have been working
with Brighton and Horsham Samaritans in Lewes
Prison:
Prisons
Eastbourne Samaritans support Lewes Prison and
prisoners in crisis through the 'Prison Listener
Scheme'. With the help of the prison service,
Samaritan Volunteers from Eastbourne, Brighton
and Horsham teach suitable inmates at Lewes the
same listening, empathy and support skills that
our own volunteers learn. The 'Listeners' in
turn then offer confidential Samaritan support
to needy colleagues. The 'Prison Listeners' are
on call around the clock and it can be
gruelling. Our role is to give the 'Listeners'
support in their work and to ensure Samaritan
ethics are followed. This helps many lives, but
for 'Listeners' in particular, helping others is
often a positive step toward their own
rehabilitation.
