Chesterfield and a shop

Once upon a time someone suggested we should have a shop, near the Market Place. Other branches did very well from their shops, so why not us? Larger, well known charities enticed shoppers and appeared successful, Samaritans could do it as well if not better.

The idea moved from the 'wish list' to the 'doing list' with a new director coinciding with a new volunteer who had years of experience running his own shop. Jeff agreed to lead this project with Malcolm (Fundraising). The search for premises was in full swing.

After some near misses, a shop which met our needs was found, rented, the owner did a make over -well sort of - funding activities hotted up and finally some money was available via our local volunteer agency, Links who knew where to look for funds.

Meanwhile volunteers, their families and friends had been donating goods for the shop. This took over a room in our centre. Fortunately for us a couple of shops in Chesterfield decided tio refurbish or close down, selling off fixtures and fittings.

Samaritans, with silver tongues, acquired rails, mannequins, fittings, a till and sundry other equipment ar affordable prices. A local signage firm agreed to complete the signs for free - a very welcome donation.

New non-listening volunteers work in the shop which is well stocked with some absolute gems as well as some bits you never expected to see again.

Samaritans Charity Shop started trading on January 23rd and was officially opened by Paul Holmes, M P,( Chesterfield's local member of Parliament), on February 11th: a photo opportunuity for all concerned. To date the income is healthy and promises well.
