Chesterfield Samaritans' latest project is a charity shop in town. The idea came from Jeff, a volunteer who has been in retail business himself, and based on the success of our colleagues in Mansfield and Sheffield we decided to give it a go.

Jeff did a great deal of research into possible locations, and finally came up with premises on West Bars, next door to Bothams the Estate Agents.

Knowing that set-up costs for a new business can be high, we applied via Links to the Derbyshire Community Foundation and were delighted to be awarded £13,420 to help us get started.

Even so, we have attempted to keep costs to a minimum in every way possible. We were able to have the shop signs donated and fitted free by Howsons Signs. We were also able to obtain most fittings at much reduced prices from Littlewoods, who are due to close at the end of January.

We intend to employ a paid manager and are recruiting non-listening volunteers to help run the shop. Although we have a few, we urgently need more, and anyone who can spare a few hours a week would be most welcome. Just ring 01246 270000 and leave a message for Jeff.

Our volunteers and their friends and families have donated a great deal of stock, but further donations of clothes, books, CDs, DVDs and general bric-a-brac would also be much appreciated.
