Sylvia Hughes (1921 - 2007)
Plaque for the Training Room

Slyvia Hughes joined the Cardiff Branch of the Samaritans in the 1960's and was a keen volunteer untill in 1970 when she moved to Herefordshire with her husband Jimmie and sons, Simon and Jamie. Sylvia became a member of the steering group that over saw the establishment of a new branch in Hereford, who went on to serve two terms as Branch Director and later formed the Herefordshie Friends of the Samaritans and became it's Chair.
Simon Hughes, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Demorcrats, and his brother Dr. Jamie Hacker Hughes visited Cardiff Samaritans on Friday 15th October 2010 to unveil a plaque in memory of their late mother Sylvia Hughes to mark her work as a volunteer with the Samaritans.
Simon and Jamie kindly made a generous bequest in their mother's memory to Cardiff Samaritans to help with training of present and future volunteers.
Simon and Jamie Hughes said "Our parents loved South Wales dearly and contributed greatly to the community during the years between 1959 and 1970 when we lived in Glamorgan. We are pleased to be able to use some money they left to continue the work of the Samaritans in Wales"
Simon and Jamie were met at the centre by Samaritan volunteers where they unveiled the plaque on the Training room door and later enjoyed tea and home made welsh cakes with the volunteers.
Both Jamie and Simon later sent a message thanking the team for the warm welcome and for such a excellent, informative and above all, worthwhile visit.

Torchwood! Script! Autographs!
As Captain Jack's local branch of Samaritans, we are delighted to announce that we've been given the script from Episode 3 of BBC Three's awesome TORCHWOOD (the Ghost Machine episode), by the scriptwriter. It's been autographed by the 5 main cast members and the writer herself. A huge thanks to everyone involved!
It's now on eBay, with all money raised by the auction to go to fund the running costs of the branch.

Grab yourself a piece of Science Fiction history here! And help us to continue helping others in the process.
Thanks!
