Training

Application Procedure

Bristol, like all other branches, runs its own Samaritans training classes. This is the same Initial Training course common to all Samaritans branches so that we have a consistent approach to all Callers. You will attend 9 training sessions within a group, with role plays and group discussions.

After this initial preparation you will be able to observe other volunteers at work before taking your first call. For the first six months you will be assigned to a mentor and have support of other trained volunteers as well as taking part in some further training yourself. Every year after this initial training, listening volunteers attend five hours on-going training in the branch.

Support volunteers will be asked to attend the first 3 hour module of the Initial Training course but will then have training specific for the task they are to carry out in the branch. They will also be asked to keep their skills up to date each year relevant to the work they are doing for the branch.
