Selection

Application Procedure

We collect the names of people interested in joining Samaritans over a period before the training begins. The applications are received in several ways: - by telephone, letter, email and by people calling into the Centre.

Four or five times a year we hold a Selection Day, usually on a Sunday. A video is shown and various activities are run designed to help us in our selection process
and for applicants to learn more about what Samaritans actually do.

Towards the end of the session we interview each applicant. This is not as daunting as it sounds and trained Samaritans have an informal and friendly chat with each potential Samaritan.

We ask questions and any anxieties or queries can be discussed at this time. Everyone is contacted very quickly to let them know if they are to be accepted for the next training class.

Occasionally we may suggest the applicant may be more suited to other charity work, including helping as a support Samaritan but this is never done without very careful consultation with all our team present.

From then on the new trainees will join the Samaritan Initial Training classes.
