Selection Application
Procedure
The first step is to attend one of our informal Information Evenings. Having attended an Information Evening, and if you decide to apply to join Samaritans, we ask you to complete a simple application form and provide the names of two referees. We will then invite you to attend the next Selection Day (usually held on a Sunday four times a year). On a Selection Day a video is shown and various activities are run, designed to help us in our selection process and for applicants to learn more about what Samaritans actually do. Towards the end of the session we interview each applicant. This is an opportunity for us to have an informal and friendly chat with each potential volunteer and for you to ask any questions. Following the Selection Day and interview, everyone is contacted very quickly to let them know if they are successful. Successful applicants will be invited to attend our initial training and Criminal Record Bureau checks will be carried out to protect our Callers, some of whom may be vulnerable. Occasionally we may suggest the applicant may be more suited to other charity work, but this is never done without very careful consultation with all our selection team present. From then on the new trainees will join our Samaritans Initial Training classes as a New Samaritans Volunteer. More information about the training
