Worcester Samaritans welcome their new Branch Director!
The new Director of the Worcester Branch of Samaritans is Jean Smallwood who has just over from Philip Keatley whose term ended in Febuary.
Samaritan Directors deal with all matters concerning callers and volunteers and have overall responsibility for the Branch. They are chosen by the volunteers and remain in office for three years.
Jean has been a Samaritan for fifteen years. During that time she has been involved in many aspects of Branch life, including supporting callers, giving talks to outside organisations and, as Branch Chairman, being in charge of Branch administration.
The beginning of Jean's term of office coincides with the move to new premises, next door to the old centre in Sansome Place. When asked what she considered most important to her about the Branch she had this to say:
"One of the most important aspects of the Branch as far as I am concerned is that we respect and value one another. Without that, how can we give of our best to our callers? Now that we are in a warm, comfortable, well-equipped environment we can give help and support by whatever route our callers choose to use, telephone, e-mail or face to face. We now have not only the means but the up to date technology to achieve that support."
And what does she hope to achieve over the next three years?
"I have three main hopes. During my term of office I hope I can encourage the volunteers to continue to provide the 24-hour, every day of the year service.
"I also hope that every volunteer will endeavour to attend on-going training, which makes us all aware of the support needed for our callers.
"And lastly I hope that we continue to have the support from the community. The money raised by the Young Farmers, for example, from their epic Blackpole to Blackpool cycle, ride made such a difference to the refurbishment of our new premises."
The volunteers of Worcester Branch are delighted that Jean has accepted the post, and wish her much success and satisfaction during her three years.
