People
want to a Samaritan volunteer for many different reasons. Every listening
volunteer goes through an initial training programme, where you take part in
group discussions and practice sessions. You learn how to actively listen
and the different types of calls.
You get
a feeling of what it is actually like to be a Samaritan but the training
can't teach you everything!
Here are
some of the things volunteers have said about being a volunteer at the
Bexley & Dartford branch:
“It
is a privilege to be associated with a branch with such a big heart”
“Being a Samaritan has opened my eyes in more ways than one. I have
found that I don’t judge as quickly as I used to”
“Samaritans – for me it has been a
challenging and rewarding experience with emotional highs and lows. A
chance to help others and a chance for me to gain self-confidence”
"It's good to
know you sometimes help people. Not only in times of crisis but also
those who are very alone and depressed”
“The
hope that, if one person has changed their life for the better, then we
have succeeded”
“Being a Samaritan has helped me enormously grow as a person”
“Satisfaction from trying to help and support others. Learning new
skills and gaining the confidence to try things I would never have
considered before. I have got a lot more out of being a “Sam” than I
could ever have dreamed of”
“I
think I have got more out of being a Samaritan than I have put in”
