Training: On-Going Training
New Samaritans | External Training | Diversity and Equality Policy | Selection & Training Dates

On-Going Training.
Affectionately known as OGT – is something that all Samaritans commit to doing at least 5 hours of per year. It can be on a range of subjects, such as E-mail training, Young Callers, Substance influenced Callers, Self Harming and Honesty with our Callers, to name but a few. Some OGT sessions have invited speakers to attend from outside agencies to give Samaritan volunteers a talk about their particular service.

A great plus of OGT is the social aspect, if their duties do not coincide it is a good opportunity to meet fellow Samaritans, sometimes for the first time, or as old friends.

There are also regular regional training events that volunteers can attend, such as a weekend away for new volunteers, and regional training days that cover various roles within Samaritans.

Conferences are held regionally and nationally. The National Conference held on the York University Campus, is a magnificent event with many very interesting outside speakers, such as Oliver James (Psychologist), Dr Raj Persaud (Psychiatrist) both well known broadcasters and writers; plenary lectures and workshops – and is also very social with well-oiled bars!
