Are you ordinary enough to become a
Samaritan Volunteer in Bristol?
We are always in need of more listening volunteers. We
are a very friendly group comprising all ages and backgrounds. You don’t need
qualifications or experience to join us and your background is
immaterial, but you must be 18 or over, a good listener and willing to
carry out listening duties in our Centre of approximately four hours
each. All our volunteers receive free training and ongoing support and we
also pay volunteers reasonable out of pocket expenses.
The number of duties expected varies on when you do
them as we work a tariff system where each duty earns a number of points
and volunteers are asked to earn a minimum of 70 points every two months.
Night duties, of which every volunteer is expected to do one every two
months, are worth 20 points each. For other duties the points vary
depending on the time of day, but the actual mix of duty times depends on
which best suits each individual volunteer. All listening volunteers must
also complete 5 hours ongoing training every year.
Potential Volunteers are requested to attend an
Information Evening in our Centre. If you then decide to join you will be
given an application form and invited to attend a Selection Day. During
this day we explain in detail what we do, have a one to one talk with you
and run simple activities to see if you are the sort of person we are
looking for. Successful applicants will be invited to attend our initial
training.
We also have
opportunities for a number of support volunteers (dependant
on the vacancies available at the time) who help run various administration tasks
required by the branch such as maintaining our volunteer database, Rota
and Statistics Secretaries, and also Publicity, Fundraising and building
maintenance. We try our best to match your skills and interests with our
need for volunteers and discuss with you to agree the time expected of
you.
