Training

Application Procedure

Bristol, like all other branches, runs its own Samaritans training classes. This is the same Initial Training course common to all Samaritan branches so that we have a consistent approach to all Callers. You will attend 8 training sessions within a group, with role plays and group discussions.

After this initial preparation you will be able to observe other volunteers at work before taking your first call. For the first few months you will be assigned to a mentor and have support of other trained volunteers. You will then be asked to attend a further 5 training sessions which will give you the opportunity to discuss with the Training Team and your fellow New Samaritans your experiences to date and to reinforce some of the skills you have been trained in so far. Every year after this initial training, listening volunteers attend five hours on-going training in the branch.

Support volunteers will be asked to attend the first 3 hour module of the Initial Training course but will then have training specific for the task they are to carry out in the branch. They will also be asked to keep their skills up to date each year relevant to the work they are doing for the branch.
